Starred this Week

It’s been a really fun, really exhausting week.  Last weekend we went home for my little brother’s graduation, did the whole grad party thing, I ate at some delicious places, got together with friends (including this lovely lady!) and then… drove a car packed to the brim home to my parents’ yesterday.  On the way home I met one of my college roommates for lunch, and then came home, unpacked and tried to get a little bit of work done.  To top it all off, the summer program that I’ve taught at the last couple of years starts today.

{I think for the first time ever, not one of these photos is on my Instagram. That’s how busy it was.}

This weekend Brian is coming up again and we’ll have another car load to find space for (our moving schedule is probably a whole post in and of itself) and Father’s Day and another round of grad parties.  Even though it’s been a lot over the last couple of weeks, I’m really enjoying it.  I just keep figuring (and hoping?) that I’ll have some more time to rest in July.  What are you up to this weekend, friends?

Explore. Create. Repeat. (Found via Allie!)

I can totally relate to this, down to the jaw pain.

I saw this article on Facebook, and it was a great read.  It made me feel so lucky to have a mom that always promoted a healthy body image.  So thanks Mom!

I signed up for Making Things Happen in October!  I’m so excited- anyone else going?

Cristina was nice enough to feature me on her new Designer Profile series!

Don’t forget to look at the big picture.

Look at the Big Picture

It’s been a while since I’ve been introspective on here.  It’s easy for me to see why that is.  Introspective posts take the most thought.  And the last two months or so, every time I sit down to write a post that goes beneath the surface, well, I have a hard time completing my thoughts.

It’s kind of funny, because at the beginning of the year things were pretty slow.  I spent a ton of time thinking about what I wanted and where my business was headed.  That doesn’t mean that I came up with great answers or anything, but I was definitely putting the time in.

Sometime this spring I put my nose to the grindstone and somehow months started to fly by before I could really look up.  It’s a little bit like I stepped on a hamster wheel and I’m not sure how to slow down or step off.  I spend my days trying to tackle my never-ending to-do list without addressing any of the things that are a big deal to my daily routine.  Is any of this sounding familiar?

Let’s be honest- I like the daily work of my business.  I love working with my clients and client projects are really fun and exciting for me.  In a lot of ways, being super busy with that stuff is a great excuse to ignore the scary big questions that come with having your own business.  But that doesn’t mean that ignoring them is the solution.

The last couple of days I’ve been able to snap out of it and remember that sometimes you have to put the oxygen mask on your own business before you can help others (let’s see how many metaphors I can squeeze in here, shall we?)  But seriously- if my system has flaws that are causing things to break down, where will I be in a few months when those things that I haven’t addressed are really taking a toll on my business?

Because I like to use my blog as a way to force myself to be proactive, here are three ways that I’ve found are helpful when you can’t seem to break this cycle of being stuck working in your business instead of working on your business.  And how I plan on setting aside some quality time to look at my big picture.

1. Schedule it.  If I don’t schedule time to think about and work on my business, it’s just not going to happen.  I need a weekly date with my sketchbook to jot down ideas and check in with my goals.

2.  Step away from the computer.  My best thinking happens when I’m not in front of the computer screen.  I really want to start reading more, both for business and pleasure.

3.  Talk about it.  It always helps me to talk it out with others, whether it’s a family member or a friend in the biz.

Do you struggle with getting sucked into the day-to-day stuff?  What do you do to snap out of it?

TGIF, amigos!  Yesterday we drove up to my parents house in the gross rain for my brother’s graduation this weekend.  If you’re in my neck of the woods, stay dry today!

Last weekend one of my friends from college got married in Charlottesville.  It was seriously amazing.  I barely captured the prettiness on my phone, so that should give you an idea of just how gorgeous the whole thing was.  And it’s always fun to catch up with old friends and frolic around our old stomping grounds.

{lest you be confused- middle right and bottom two are shots from my run in Lexington.  Yes, I happily stop running to take photos for Instagram.  One might argue that Instagram sometimes motivates me to run.}

This weekend we’ll be doing the whole graduation party and actual ceremony thing.  I can’t believe my baby brother is graduating from high school!  I feel ancient.  What are you up to this weekend, friends?

I know I’ve shared this before, but PicMonkey is a pretty cool.  It took like 3 minutes to make the collage above.

I’m kind of obsessed with this post on Oh Joy.

Wrapped up another month.

Because I’m into thank you notes.

LaBelleMel got a makeover yesterday!

LaBelleMel

I’m so excited to share this fun new blog design with you guys!  Melanie wanted a magazine-style layout that used mostly neutrals with hints of antique pink and lots of floral elements.  It had been a while since I did a really feminine blog design, so I really loved working on this project!

LaBelleMelMelanie is so sweet and was so much fun to work with.  Make sure you go check out her blog for yourself- she has an amazing sense of style, and she also does a lot of awesome video tutorials!

Gift of Gratitude

I’m a firm believer in a good thank you note.  But I must confess that as a natural procrastinator, sometimes if I don’t have the right note card to use it takes me a while to get the card in the mail.  Uncommon Goods was nice enough to send me the Year of Gratitude Set to review, and I’m super motivated to send some notes!  Bring on the gifts, people.

year of gratitude

I knew I would love the card designs from the website listing, but those shiny gold envelopes were a very pleasant surprise!  It even comes with a sweet Year of Gratitude journal, which I’m excited to start using.  I feel like I’m constantly coming across articles and blog posts about how the simple act of recognizing all the things that you are grateful for can greatly increase your day-to-day happiness.  However, if you’re not in the habit of taking the time to do that, well… it’s easy to let it go by the wayside.  This little journal would go a long way to give you a reason to sit down and ponder all the good things in your life.

If you’re anything like me, you’re probably in the market for some last-minute graduation gifts (the final of my 3 graduations of 2013 is this weekend!)  I’m always in favor of the gift of stationery, and the way this set is packaged makes it a great graduation gift!  If that doesn’t seem like it would suit your graduate, Uncommon Goods has a ton of other great options!  And they also have a lot of affordable items to pick from.

Are you a believer in the magic of handwritten thank you notes?  I didn’t write many as a kid, but as an adult I’ve really come to appreciate them.  There’s just something so fun about getting something handwritten in the mail!  I’m a stationery nerd, so if you have any tried and true favorite stationery sources I’d love to hear about them in the comments!

Father’s Day is also coming up, and Uncommon Goods has some great gift ideas!

I received this set from Uncommon Goods to review, but was otherwise not compensated for this post.  All opinions are from yours truly.
